Kim McCarty’s watercolors depict young people, girls and boys, at fragile moments. Uncertain about life and what it holds, McCarty’s subjects are delicate, yet enigmatic individuals, full of promise and mystery, captured at a point in their lives in which the future stretches out before them and any outcome is possible. Writing in the catalogue for the Hammer Museum’s important 2003 exhibition, International Paper, curator Claudine Isé comments that McCarty’s adolescent and preadolescent children “hover between presence and absence, innocence and wisdom.
In these works, McCarty uses strokes of watercolor on super-saturated paper to figure subjects, who as Isé comments, “appear to be fading away before our eyes.” The edges of these figures are soft; their color bleeds into the field around them, the difference between the figure and the ground blending together in the fluid play of the liquid medium.
Kim McCarty received a BFA from Art Center College of Design and a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her work has recently been seen in solo exhibitions at Briggs Robinson Gallery, New York, NY, the Santa Barbara Contemporary Art Forum, Santa Barbara, CA and such recent group exhibitions as Contemporary Erotic Drawing at the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Liquid Los Angeles: Currents in Contemporary Watercolor at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena, CA; and Drawn to the Present at Pace University, Pleasantville, NY.
