Kwame BRATHWAITE (b. 1938, New York, NY) is currently the subject of major touring exhibition, Kwame Brathwaite: Black Is Beautiful. The exhibition premiered at the Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA) and will travel to the Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco, CA), Columbia Museum of Art (Columbia, SC), and Austin Museum of Art (Austin, TX). A monograph of the same title, produced by the Aperture Foundation, was released May 2019 with essays by Deborah Willis, Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts of New York University and Tanisha C. Ford, Associate Professor of Black American Studies and History at the University of Delaware. Brathwaite’s work has recently been acquired by such institutions as The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY); National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC); Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY);  Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University (Chicago, IL); MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge, MA); Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Houston, Texas); Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY); The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, NY); Museum of the City of New York (New York, NY); Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA); JPMorgan Chase Art Collection (New York, NY); and Sidley Austin LLP (New York, NY). Brathwaite's work has recently appeared in The New Yorker, The New York TimesVogueNew York PostNew York MagazineAperture, and other publications. Brathwaite lives and works in New York, NY.

 

Brian BRESS (b. 1975, Norfolk, VA) received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2006. His work was recently featured in In Productionat the Yuz Museum, Shanghai, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Brian Bress: Pictures Become You, Akron Art Museum (Akron, OH) and Paradox: The Body in the Age of AI, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA). Bress’s work has been recently featured in such solo and group exhibitions as Screens: Virtual Material, DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Boston, MA); In the Box: Brian Bress, Chrysler Museum of Art (Norfolk, VA); The Imperfect Tense (for Josef Albers), Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore, MD); Commercial Break, Public Art Fund (New York, NY); and 2016 Moving Image Biennial, Centre d'Art Contemporain Geneva (Geneva, Switzerland). His 2015-16 touring exhibition, Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends, opened at Utah Museum of Fine Arts (Salt Lake City, UT); and traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (Denver, CO) and Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA). Bress has had solo exhibitions and projects at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA); Museo d'arte contemporanea (MACRO) (Rome, Italy); Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA); and New Museum (New York, NY). His work is the collections of Frederick R. Edgar BRYAN (b. 1970, Birmingham, AL) received his BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 and his MFA from the University of California in 2001. Recent solo and group exhibitions include Edgar Bryan's Paranoid Counterpoint Blues, Grifter (New York, NY); Household Effects, La Loma Projects (Pasadena, CA); Welcome to the Dollhouse, Museum of Contemporary Art Pacific Design Center (Los Angeles, CA); Soft Corners, Richard Telles (Los Angeles, CA); Paradise, Night Gallery (Los Angeles, CA); the love gang, Regen Projects (Los Angeles, CA); and The Undiscovered Country, Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA). His work is in the collections of Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA), Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA), Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo, Norway), and Museum der Morderne (Salzburg, Austria). His work has been featured in publications such as Frieze and The New York Times. Bryan lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

 

Tomory DODGE (b. 1974, Denver, CO) received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2004. Dodge will be subject of a solo exhibition at Ceysson et Bénétière (Paris, France) in the winter of 2020. Daniel DOVE (b. 1971, Austin, TX) received his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin (Austin, TX) and his MFA from Yale University (New Haven, CT). Dove’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at Cherry and Martin (Los Angeles, CA), Jack Shainman Gallery (New York, NY), Cleveland Institute of Art (Cleveland, OH), Frederick R. Weisman Museum (Malibu, CA), and The Contemporary Austin (Austin, TX). He has received grants from the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Ohio Arts Council. Daniel Dove is the recipient of The William and Dorothy Yeck Award and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship. He has been featured in various publications such as ArtforumArt in AmericaLos Angeles TimesThe Village VoiceHarper’s MagazineLA Weekly, and Tema Celeste. Daniel Dove’s work is in the permanent collections of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum (Malibu, CA), Progressive Insurance (Cleveland, OH), and Hallmark Art Collection (Kansas City, MO). Daniel Dove is a full-time faculty member at California State University, Long Beach. Dove lives and works in San Pedro, CA. 

 

Joanne PETIT-FRÈRE (b. 1987, New York, NY) received their BA from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Petit-Frère's work was recently included in A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes at the Museum of Pop Culture (Seattle, WA) and This Synthetic Moment (Replicant), curated by David Hartt at Philip Martin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA). Petit-Frère's work has been included in recent performances and exhibitions at MoMA PS1 (New York, NY); New Orleans Museum of Art (New Orleans, LA); and The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African and African American Art, Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). Petit-Frère has created custom hair sculptures for Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, Les Nubians, and Janelle Monáe, among others. Their work has been featured in publications such as VogueVogue Italia, and Vogue JapanThe New Yorker,The Evening StandardAnOther Magazine, and Cultured Magazine. Petit-Frère lives and works in New York, NY.
