Philip Martin Gallery is pleased to present, "Night Dance," an online exhibition of watercolor and gouache paintings-on-paper by London, Ontario based artist, Sky Glabush. The exhibition focuses on new themes in Glabush's work, drawn from his on-going investigation of new ideas in landscape and portraiture as dynamic pictorial motifs for his art.
In Sky Glabush's work, landscape is alive, individuals are engaged, and energy courses through all aspects of experience. Glabush encourages viewers to participate in revelatory moments that point to what is possible in a painting, and, by extension, in representation itself. With precise details - a flower, a leaf, the turn of a subject's head - embedded in often all-over compositions, Glabush presents a total experience, one that reminds us of the wonder of the world, and our shared humanity.
Using vivid color, strong line, shape and texture, Glabush constructs landscapes that are places of encounter. Glabush's portraits, on the other hand, are means by which to discover another person, or perhaps, a deeper sense of oneself. Glabush's landscapes and portraits are generally not real places or individuals per se, though they may be based on them; indeed, they are windows onto the nature of experience - a means by which to navigate an enlightened world.
One of Glabush's works in the Philip Martin Gallery show, "Black Pine Galiano,” is, perhaps, a recollection of night-time on Galiano Island, just off the lower mainland of British Columbia. Another work, "Red Portrait," envisions an encounter with an individual, replete with lines of radiant color, their visage ringed in electric green. Sky Glabush's process takes on his own experiences and memories. He works through the figuring of image and motif in the studio. He pays attention to what is possible in a given picture. In this sense, Glabush's landscapes and portraits are spaces of becoming, spaces in which mystery is revealed to us, and reveled in.
