Philip Martin Gallery is pleased to present, "Without Beginning and Ending," an exhibition of never-before-seen paintings-on-paper by Austrian-born, Los Angeles-based artist Hubert Schmalix. The show features ten years of motifs in Schmalix's work.
For over five decades Hubert Schmalix has pursued a thoughtful, deliberative practice. "The only thing I'm interested in is the abstraction of it because every painting is abstract to me - even if it is a realistic image." Schmalix's works explore feeling and emotions, thoughts and memories. Schmalix makes pictures that point to the nature of painting; the connection between artist and material; the relation of viewer and art object.
Hubert Schmalix grew up in the post war years in Europe. His older brother, who had been to art school, taught him, "how beautiful and how tough art is.” In the works included in the show, we see places real and imagined. The mountains of Austria appear in waterfalls and cabins, chalets and mountain huts. The sunshine of Los Angeles, where Schmalix has lived for almost forty years, comes through in images of grapes and daisies.
There is a feeling of stillness in these paintings, but there is also something dynamic. "The paintings tell me when they are done," Schmalix says, "The paintings I do are a search for an answer. It is the search that keeps me working.”
Hubert Schmalix (b. 1952 Graz, Austria) is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at Schlossmuseum Linz (Linz Castle). The show will focus on his luminescent landscapes as well as nudes, flowers and cityscapes. Important exhbitionsfeaturing Schmalix's work include Venice Biennale (1993, Venice Italy); Foundation Cartier (1986, Paris, France); "An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture" (1984, Museum of Modern Art, New York); and Biennale Sydney (1984, Sydney, Australia). Recent and upcoming solo museum exhibitions include Schlossmuseum Linz (2024, Linz, Austria) and Neue Galerie Graz, Universalmuseum Joanneum. Graz (2023, Graz, Austria).
