October 2005, Los Angeles - cherrydelosreyes presents side-by-side two exciting exhibitions of contemporary painting: new works by the New York based artist Holly Coulis and new works by Los Angeles artist Max Maslanksy.
The exhibition opens January 7, 2006 and runs through February 13, 2006. Opening reception is Saturday, January 7, 2006, 6-9pm.
Holly Coulis'new paintingsdepict passing moments snatched from the flow of time and held up for exploration and appreciation. Slowed down, these moments are like scenes from Noh drama or a film by Akira Kurosawa-elevated, aestheticized and made to suggest quiet elegance and grace, subtle meaning and fleeting beauty. In addition to traditional Japanese aesthetics, Coulis draws heavily on the images of Western art history and the composition and techniques of American painters like Milton Avery and Fairfield Porter.
Coulis' interest in the importance of unheralded moments finds a parallel in the work of Max Maslansky, several of whose new paintings depict fallen or failed heroic male archetypes, such cowboys and sportsmen, painters and composers, kings and superheroes. Max Maslansky uses an unusual technique in which the absorbent ground he applies to his work alternately absorbs and repels the pigments from his brush, creating an uneven surface of drips and brushstrokes that adds to the sense of his depiction of tentative scenes.
Holly Coulis received her BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design and her MFA from the Boston Museum School. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the recent "She's Come Undone" at Artemis Greenbereg VanDoren Gallery in New York and "Marilyn" at Sean Kelly Gallery in New York. In the past two years, Coulis has had solo exhibitions at GroeflinMaag Galerie in Basel, Switzerland; Greener Pastures in Toronto and Zach Feuer Gallery / LFL in New York. Her solo exhibition at Cherry and Martin will be the artist's first on the West Coast.
Max Maslansky received his BFA from Bard College and pursued post-baccalaureate study at the Glasgow School of Art. He will receive his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2006. Paintings by Max Maslansky were recently featured in the exhibition "Frontier" at Roberts and Tilton Gallery in Los Angeles. His work has also appeared in exhibitions at Monya Rowe Gallery in New York and "The 4-Color Pen Show," which traveled to Miami, Milwaukee and Chicago.
