Friday, June 28, 2019 from 7-8pm at Hancock Park, LACMA.
Carl Cheng, 2017 Art + Technology Lab grant recipient, and Dr. Emily Lindsey, Assistant Curator at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, tour the still-active asphalt seeps of Hancock Park. The artist and scientist will discuss the role asphalt plays in their respective work and in the changing environment and technological landscape. Dr. Lindsey will explain how scientists are using the exquisitely detailed paleontological record from the La Brea Tar Pits to learn about the impacts of climate change, while Cheng will explain his long-held fascination with the substance and his experience experimenting with it as an artistic medium. The tour will culminate with a demonstration of Cheng’s prototype of his Tar Pool Project in LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab.
