In his large-scale paintings, Dodge’s process explores concepts of transition by continuously building, destroying, and transforming layers of thick oil paints with fluid strokes of his brushes and knives. He excavates and buries layers creating spaces in his painting that are liminal and in flux. Dodge sees paintings as having two subjects. The first is the paint itself; the application of the paint, the thickness, the texture, and the color. The second subject is the representations the paint makes, whether abstracted or figurative. His process is based in a duality that is intuitive yet planned while he finds his representational subjects through the application and removal of his paint subject.
During his residency at Lux Art Institute, Tomory Dodge will create a large 72 x 60” oil painting, along with smaller “supporting” works. His dramatic, transformative mode of painting will be adapted to exploring themes of interconnection and individual cosmology.
