Brathwaite took half a million photos including many of “ordinary” black people on the street and thousands of intimate and unexpected photos of stars at crucial moments of their lives, including Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, and the Jackson Five.

Kwame Brathwaite’s photos of black communities and people focused on beauty and joy instead of trauma and conflict. Rihanna, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Jesse Williams, Gabrielle Union, Tyler Mitchell and others speak emotionally and personally about discovering and championing Brathwaite's work. This uplifting, cinematic and bold film is rooted in blackness, telling the remarkable journey of artist/activist Kwame Brathwaite, his family, his peers, the Grandassa Models and of course his photographs.

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL was produced by Misfits, Wayfarer and Joanna Boateng. It is directed by Yemi Bamiro Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Jesse Williams & Moby are executive producing. Otto Burnham edited the film.
