Holly Coulis' paintings exist somewhere between the film still and the still life. Like the film still, her images seem dislocated from some obtuse narrative (a diegesis), suspending figures at the threshold of ordinary actions. Yet, like film stills, these quietly affecting compositions acquiesce to the weighty traditions of pictorial realism and portraiture, practices that are as authoritative as they are burdened by history. Using the stock techniques of painting, Coulis directs the heuristic possibilities of each composition, always constructing a precise mise-en-scene. This deliberate arrangement of characters spins ordinary human moments into unseen stories while retaining a charged potential, like that of a cinematic film still.
