At Expo Chicago, Philip Martin Gallery presents solo exhibitions by Brian Bress and Tomory Dodge. Booths 364 & 366. Brian Bress will show new wall-mounted, monitor-based video works, several of which will be featured in his upcoming exhibition at the Akron Museum of Art; Tomory Dodge’s oil-on-canvas paintings follow on his recent solo presentation and residency at LUX Art Institute.
Brian Bress (b. 1975, Norfolk, VA) will exhibit four new videos, each exploring a different nature motif — clouds, dunes, palms and flowers. The booth will also feature Bress’s diptych video, "Organizing The Physical Evidence (Gradients on Gradients)” and the “drawer” triptych, “Astronauts #1 (on broken circles and lines).”
Brian Bress has described himself as coming to video with the agenda of a painter. His single and multi-channel videos address the connections between film, sculpture photography and painting. All the costumes we see in Bress’s works are made in his studio, as are shallow sets in which his characters act. While the mechanics of the camera rationalize Bress’s actions two-dimensionally, the action in the studio is physical. There are no special effects. Upcoming projects for Brian Bress include a solo presentation at the Akron Museum of Art, “Brian Bress: Pictures Become You,” October 13, 2018 - April 14, 2019, and the group exhibition, “Paradox: The Body in the Age of Al,” at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg, PA, October 5, 2018 - February 3, 2019.
Tomory Dodge (b. 1974, Denver, CO) will present new medium and large-scale abstract oil-on-canvas paintings. The 62 x 60 inch painting, “Barbarian,” is a densely layered picture exploring the representation and mechanics of painting. The 48 x 36 inch painting, “Nocturne,” emphasizes figure/ground relationships, the sense of the picture plane and the visual push/pull of abstract space.
Tomory Dodge writes, “I have often talked about paintings being inherently contradictory things. They are objects that are spaces, walls that are windows. They are the intersection of object and image. Painting maintains a physical anchor at a time when the image generally is becoming more and more ethereal — everywhere and nowhere at the same time.“ Tomory Dodge’s work at Expo Chicago is presented in collaboration with Miles McEenry Gallery, New York, where Dodge will have a solo exhibition in the spring of 2019.

Brian Bress received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998, and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2006. His will be featured in the upcoming solo presentation at the Akron Museum of Art, “Brian Bress: Pictures Become You,” October 13, 2018 - April 14, 2019, and the group exhibition, “Paradox: The Body in the Age of Al,” at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg, PA, October 5, 2018 - February 3, 2019. Bress’s work was recently the subject of the following solo and group exhibitions: “Screens: Virtual Material,” (DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Boston, MA); “In the Box: Brian Bress” (Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA); “The Imperfect Tense (for Josef Albers)” (Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD); “Commercial Break” (Public Art Fund, New York, NY); and “2016 Moving Image Biennial” (Centre d'Art Contemporain Geneva, Switzerland). Brian Bress’s 2015-16 touring exhibition, “Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends,” opened at Utah Museum of Fine Arts (Salt Lake City, UT); and traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (Denver, CO); and Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA).
