Philip Martin Gallery is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition, "Do Something To It. Do Something Else To It." The show will open Saturday April 28 and run through May 26.
"Do Something To It. Do Something Else To It." features works by Ericka Beckman, Kwame Brathwaite, Brian Bress, Carl Cheng, Holly Coulis, Katy Cowan, Tomory Dodge, Noël Dolla, Nathan Mabry, T. Kelly Mason, Pat O'Neill, Robert Overby, Bernard Piffaretti, Michael Rey, Adam Silverman, Lew Thomas and Claude Viallat.
Inspired by Jasper Johns's famous 1964 sketchbook note, "Take an Object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.,” the exhibition title reflects an attitude with regard to creative process. Johns's statement, read with over fifty years of hindsight, forces us to consider what art objects are today, what starting points mean, and the nature of both art-making and art-viewing alike.
Philip Martin Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-6pm and by appointment. For further information and images please contact the gallery at +310-559-0100 or info@philipmartingallery.com.
