Cherry and Martin announces the inaugural exhibition at the new gallery space at 2712 S. La Cienega Blvd. This first show will feature works by Brian Bress, Holly Coulis, Daniel Dove, Nathan Mabry, Antonio Puleo and Amanda Ross-Ho.
Works include a new video by Brian Bress, an artist whose practice takes on the space between the inane and the sublime. Utilizing a constructed three-sided set with Bress as the main actor, the artist summons, through both staged and improvised means, characters that illicit a range of responses from empathy to repulsion.
Painters Holly Coulis and Daniel Dove each contribute works that continue their respective interests in painting’s history and methods. A new large unique bronze sculpture by Nathan Mabry, Process Art (An Eye For An Eye), employs a copy of Rodin’s St. John the Baptist and “masks” it with a found oversize costume shop mask. The startling combination of art history and kitsch creates a new expression of pathos for modern viewers.
Antonio Puleo provides a preview for his upcoming solo show at the gallery with a work that explores the language of religious experience as signified through contemporary painterly expression. Amanda Ross-Ho will exhibit Untitled Proximity Still Life (Window Fancies), a large leaning sheet rock work that draws connections between seemingly disparate elements and locates simultaneities present at the foundation of experience.
Brian Bress received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Last year his video Undercover (2007) was included in California Video at the Getty Museum. He was also in exhibitions at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (Los Angeles) and Bond Street Gallery (New York). He will have his first solo show at Cherry and Martin in September 2009.
Holly Coulis received her MFA from the Boston Museum School. She is currently in Figuratively Seeing, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA and has had solo exhibitions at Groeflin Maag Galerie (Basel, Switzerland); Lamontagne Gallery (Boston); and Zach Feuer/LFL Gallery (New York).
Daniel Dove received his MFA from Yale University. His work has recently been featured in the exhibitions, Facture And Fidelity curated by Christopher Bedford, RISD (Providence); Made in California at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (Malibu) and More Is More: Maximalist Tendencies in Recent American Painting at Florida State University (Tallahassee).
Nathan Mabry received a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Mabry’s work is currently on the cover of Wound journal and is included in Phaidon’s forthcoming publication Vitamin 3D. Recent exhibitions include L.A. Now, curated by David Pagel, Las Vegas Art Museum, Las Vegas, NV; Take Me There (Show Me The Way), Haunch of Venison, New York, NY; Weighing and Wanting: 25 Years of Collecting, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego, CA.
Antonio Puleo received a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has recently shown work at LAX><Art (Los Angeles) and Schmidt Dean (Philadelphia). His next solo exhibition with large-scale paintings, sculpture and wall installations will open May 23 at Cherry and Martin.
Amanda Ross-Ho received her MFA from the University of Southern California. Her work has been seen in such recent exhibitions as the 2008 California Biennial at OCMA (Newport Beach, CA), 2008 Whitney Biennial, The Whitney Museum of American Art (new York) and Make Room, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (Atlanta). Upcoming exhibitions include a three person show at the Approach (London) and a solo show in the fall at Hoet Bekaert (Gent).
