Spaces: Sky Glabush, Kristy Luck, John Joseph Mitchell

14 - 28 June 2024

Philip Martin Gallery is proud to present, "Spaces," an online exhibition of works by Sky Glabush, Kristy Luck and John Joseph Mitchell. In their respective practices, these three artists consider space as a convention of picture-making and a means by which to explore interiority and expression.

Construction of space is a long-standing question in painting. Landscape appears in "painting as window" 15th-Century Italian pictures; the idylls of the Renaissance; and later, with the advent of tubed paint, the outdoor on-site work of the English watercolorists and French Impressionists. In the various global 'modernisms' of the 19th and 20th-Century, the construction of space emerges as a negotiation between inside and outside: sometimes the artist attends to an external scene; sometimes, Maurice Denis's "colors assembled in a certain order" on "a flat surface” refer to the depths and possibilities of inner vision liberated by objective and non-objective motifs.

In his work, Sky Glabush grapples with the history of painting and the phenomenology of his own experience in the woods, fields, lakes and marshes near which he lives and works. Kristy Luck moves between inner landscapes and outer ones, referencing painterly expression, natural spaces, language and the construction of thought. John Joseph Mitchell's paintings consider subject matter and interiority; specifically, the sense that one's vision is figured by what we see, how we see and how we think about the process of our own observation.
