Drawing on nineteenth-century literature and nonfiction -works like Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and James Fenimore Cooper’s Last of the Mohicans-Aaron Morse’s works are adventure tales that celebrate a time romanticized by authors and artists—one might say the first extreme-style life. Working in an allover compositional style, he depicts the romantic landscape and seascape, as well as fabled characters of yore. Also inspired by graphic nov-els, Morse often works in a storyboard format. Canoe Epic (2002) is just that: six frames of a classic explorer and Indian guide story, stretched vertically, like an old wide-screen movie looks when viewed on a small television. 

Aaron Morse’s vision of nature combines nineteenth-century romantic epics about the wild western frontier with contemporary popular sources and a futuristic vision of reality.

The work of cover artist Aaron Morse is characterized by a varied representational strategy of multi-figure action showing natural and manmade conflicts. Often in the context of the sublime landscape, his paintings deal with a nonspecific past using American colonial history, whaling, hunting, boxing, and more recently, twentieth-century politics as a point of departure. Although Morse’s work leads to numerous interpretations, he says that it “casts a critical eye on man’s hubris and greed of late.”

For this year’s Miami Art Week, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) delivered a dazzling spectrum of creativity, presenting works from artists who explored diverse mediums and subjects. Among the standout showcases was the Philip Martin Gallery from Los Angeles, which exclusively featured Aaron Morse’s solo exhibition, “The Living World.” Morse’s work is a vivid reflection on the histories of the nostalgic Southwest and Wild West, brimming with intricate depictions of lush landscapes and the characters that animate them.
